Bike through Charleston's history with a preservationist

Pedal through Charleston’s storied past on this engaging 90-minute bike tour of historic Uptown. From the Colonial period through the Civil Rights Era, you’ll uncover the city’s rich heritage, fascinating local landmarks, and hidden gems—all while enjoying a scenic ride through its charming streets. • Uncover Charleston’s diverse history at Civil War-era sites like Hampton Park (once a plantation, racetrack, and Civil War encampment); the William Enston Homes with its stunning Romanesque Revival architecture; and cultural icons such as The Citadel, Charleston’s prestigious military college. • Hidden stories abound along our route, including through the National Register Historic District of Hampton Park Terrace where we will see the homes of nationally politicians, business leaders, and the man responsible for bringing down Al Capone. • We'll see imporant landmarks including houses and schools that were important in Charleston's 20th century Civil Rights Era struggles. Note: The tours are set up for 11:30 to 1:00 on Satursdays and Sundays because I teach during the academic year. But if other times or dates work better, let me know! Note: You'll need a bike for the tour. If you don't have one, a locally-owned bike shop (BildaBike) is just two blocks off the tour route. You can rent a bike for the whole day there for (currently) $30 and keep it to ride the rest of the day.

Skate & Destroy: Thrasher Magazine's Downtown Pilgrimage

San Francisco’s streets are the most radical site for skateboarding's history in the world. On Thrasher Magazine’s Skate and Destroy Tour, walk—or roll—through the architecture, history, and underground scene that made the city a global skateboarding mecca. • Begin at St. Mary’s Square to learn how Modernist architecture in Northern California created the most radical terrain for skateboarders, before exploring iconic spots like Black Rock, China Banks, Portsmouth Square and Embarcadero to hear how sculptures, plazas, and surfaces shaped the sport. • Follow the lines of legends like Tommy Guerrero, Keith Hufnagel, and Mike Carroll, and see firsthand how Financial District plazas became proving grounds for technical innovation in skateboarding. • Conclude at the Ferry Building, steps from the Embarcadero, where modern technical street skating was born. I’ll share stories of how skaters transformed the area into one of the most important spots in skateboarding history.

Hyde Park isn’t just Austin’s first suburb—it’s a living archive of the city’s architectural and cultural evolution. Join me, an architect and preservationist, on a walking tour through tree-lined streets and historic landmarks as we uncover the stories behind one of the city’s most significant neighborhoods. • Meet at a historic Hyde Park Fire Station, where I’ll introduce Hyde Park’s origins as a street-car suburb and its more recent history of progressive leadership. • Stroll past restored Victorian homes and early-20th-century bungalows, tree-lined streets and alleys as I share stories of the architects, residents, and preservationists who shaped the neighborhood. • Visit Shipe Park and the Elisabet Ney Museum, two landmarks saved by community-led efforts, and learn how Hyde Park evolved from an exclusive Victorian-era district to a diverse neighborhood navigating modern redevelopment. • Along the way, I’ll discuss Austin’s approach to historic preservation and the balance between growth and maintaining architectural heritage. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of Hyde Park’s past, and the many forces working to define its future.

Street Trees of Seattle Walking Tour

Seattle is home to one of the nation’s most diverse urban tree collections—double the East Coast’s average and triple the Midwest’s. Join me, a local data nerd, naturalist and bestselling author, for a stroll through Capitol Hill as we explore this charming neighborhood and its notable street trees. • We’ll begin our adventure at the locally beloved Macrina Bakery on 19th Avenue, where you’ll receive a map I’ve illustrated of the eight different trees we'll visit, along with a brief overview. • On our tree walk through the beautiful residential streets of Capitol Hill, we’ll stop at each tree to learn how to identify it and distinguish it from other species. • You’ll have a chance to see notable trees, including the city’s widest maple street tree (a native bigleaf maple), the widest sugar and silver maple street trees, and the widest giant sequoia street tree in Seattle. You’ll leave with a renewed sense of wonder, a mile of nature therapy, and a newfound appreciation for the more than 700 tree species that adorn the Emerald City. Please note: Our tour covers approximately one mile along sidewalks and lasts about 90 minutes. Be sure to bring a rain jacket, water, and wear comfortable walking shoes, rain or shine.

Before Stonewall: A queer walking tour of Greenwich Village

Join a journalist on a walking tour of Greenwich Village, visiting the homes and haunts of LGBTQ+ writers who lived, worked or were incarcerated in the decades before the Stonewall riots. • We'll meet up near the site of Eve's Hangout, considered by some to be the first lesbian bar in New York City and whose proprietor holds a special place in queer literary history. As we walk to other historic sites we'll hear more about the nightlife scene of the early 20th century, and how luminaries like Audre Lorde and Lorraine Hansberry navigated queer life. • We'll visit the former site of the Women’s House of Detention, which housed many incarcerated queer people, and I'll share its relevance to early LGBTQ+ life in the Village. • After stops to honor and consider other queer women whose literary works left lasting impressions on both our culture and the literary canon, we'll conclude at Henrietta Hudson, a lesbian bar open since 1991, to talk about present-day LGBTQ+ life in New York and beyond. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the lives of LGBTQ+ people whose work, activism and bravery led to the modern queer rights movement, and I'll send you on your way with a list of further readings if you'd like to continue learning about this fascinating era! The tour has a bathroom break at the halfway mark, and we'll walk about 1.5 miles in total.

At the far western edge of the American continent, Golden Gate Park shimmers as the final jewel of San Francisco as it reaches to the sea. Larger than the famous Central Park in New York City, Golden Gate Park brought green to the city’s sandy edge and stands today as an urban refuge of trees, lakes, meadows, bison, and mystery to be discovered. • We’ll meet at the top of the stairs in front of The Conservatory of Flowers 100 John F Kennedy Dr San Francisco, CA 94118 • We will start by learning how to use a Fujifilm polaroid camera, and will then indulge in a photo walk to the dreamiest nooks of this expansive park. • As we meander the park, I will teach you to fine tune your photographic eye by pointing out the magical moments in everyday life… See it, frame it, and snap the photo to then experience the reward of a polaroid coming to life before your eyes. You’ll walk away with a healthy dose of nature therapy and lasting photo tips for your everyday routine.

Uncover LA's Haunted History & the True Crimes of Downtown

Guided by "Gourmet Ghosts" author James T. Bartlett, step into downtown's spookiest locations and explore the architecture, crimes - and ghost stories - of LA's dark and deadly history. We start at the Biltmore Hotel, where the "Black Dahlia" was last seen alive, where ghosts haunt the ballrooms, and where a classic ghost movie was filmed. We then walk a block to Oviatt's Deadly Dream, the palace of Fashionista and designer James Oviatt - and building he still haunts after it killed him. Next we'll stop outside the Cecil Hotel. Two serial killers stayed here, and we will revisit Elisa Lam - the girl found dead on the roof water tank - and hear about the hotel's place at the center of "Suicide Triangle." Back on Spring Street, we will visit the building that now houses the Last Bookstore, and conjure up their resident ghost by going behind-the-scenes to where he died. Opposite is the Alexandria Hotel and its "Ghost Wing", which has been sealed off from the world for over 85 years, and we'll find out why the LAPD were searching for a "Ghost Woman" who had murdered a guest. Also we visit the unique skylit Bradbury Building. Known for appearing in "Blade Runner" and "The Artist", this 132 year-old legend was born came from a ghostly encounter through time. Our Manchac Magic Kayak Tour will start with pickup from N Rampart St. New Orleans, LA *(Look for van marked Wild Louisiana Tours)* Depending on the day, our tours start at 9:00AM, 12:00PM, and 3:00PM. Morning Tour Pickup: 9AM Afternoon Tour Pickup: 12PM Evening Tour Pickup: 3PM The drive to our tour location is 30-40min. We will make a bathroom stop, if people need it, at a gas station near our launch. You are welcome to bring your own water and snacks, or get some from the gas station. We will begin our tour through the beautiful and scenic Manchac Swamp. Your guide will tell you all about the wildlife and historical significance of the area. We will stop in scenic locations and take pictures and relax under the cypress trees. The tour will last about 2hrs depending on the skill level of the group. We will return to our launch site and load our boats. We will then return to N Rampart St. to conclude the trip. Every parrot has a story. You’ll learn all about our rainbow-colored rescues in Kona’s only parrot sanctuary. We’ll start with our mission: to give every displaced parrot a nutritious diet, large space to fly, and a safe place to interact with other parrots (and people). Next, we'll take a walk around the sanctuary, where you can get to know the range of personalities of cockatoos, lovebirds, macaws, and more species. Throughout the tour, you will have many photo opportunities, especially with our well-trained parrots. Other things to note: Wear casual clothes, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and bring a camera. Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary is also home to two rescue dogs, two Holstein cows and two sulcata tortoise. While we like to keep our group sizes small to enhance a personal experience, we are open to hosting larger family/friend groups with more than six individuals.

You'll see the old fishing village of Bokeelia and then cruise the fabulous wilderness of Jug Creek. Dolphin sightings are common in these waters. We will transit Back Bay, Dead Man's Curve, and view the mansion built by the battery magnate, Charles Burgess. Once we exit the Creek, we head across Pine Island Sound past Useppa Island and the world famous Baron Collier Inn, before landing at Cabbage Key. There you can walk the nature trails of the historic island and climb the water tower. You will have an hour and a half to enjoy lunch in the Old House, Cabbage Key's open air restaurant. Following your meal, we will cruise back to Knights Landing. Other things to note This experience will involve getting into and out of a boat at a dock. Often the most amazing sunsets from this spot on the water are where there are distant clouds on the horizon and the amazing colors of orange and yellow and sometimes purple paint the most unique skies you could imagine. ((( For clarification about price: Every 2 hr plus one free. hour =3 total hours, and is a private tour flat rate $300. For the Boat, gas and Captain, taxes/fees. 1 to 6 persons.)))
